EducationUSA Adviser at the US Embassy in Ghana, Bernice Affotey has cautioned prospective students from Ghana to US colleges and universities to be careful about mouth-watering scholarship schemes that ask for money before giving out scholarships.
Speaking on the Premier Morning Show on Tuesday, Bernice stated that several schools in the US offer full or partial funding to students who seek them and advised that people with peculiar challenges should contact EducationUSA for direction. She was quick to add that people looking for financial supports should avoid paying money to get money. “Well I tell my students if you’re applying for a scholarship it means you need money, so if somebody tells you to come and pay money to get money, I personally, I’m not comfortable with that. So I tell people to be very careful”
Reacting to why there is a certain perception in Ghana that certificates awarded through distance or online are inferior, Bernice explains that employers may have been used to an old system that needs to be changed by time. “It’s also because most employers in Ghana I stand to be corrected, but I think that most employers are used to having certificates from traditional programmes where you go to school for 3 years, you go to school for 4 years in person”
