TEWU Calls for Immediate Settlement of Pension Arrears

By: Michael Nene Lamptey

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has called for the immediate settlement of their Tier two pension arrears along with accumulated interests by the end of April.

Expressing their discontent, the union stated that failure by the government to address their demands by the month’s end would compel them to take further action. They emphasized the injustice of the government’s failure to pay and remit their pensions over the past six months, emphasizing that these funds were intended for investment on their behalf.

Mark Dankyira Korankye, General Secretary of TEWU, conveyed the union’s urgency at the 13th quadrennial national delegates conference held at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region. Under the theme “Fostering partnership for equitable education delivery in Ghana — The role of TEWU,” Korankye stressed the potential jeopardy to their pensions if the funds were not managed properly.

Highlighting the existing challenges faced by pensioners due to low payouts, Korankye underscored the importance of prudent investment to improve their quality of life. He also raised concerns about health hazards posed by the use of firewood by cooks in some senior high schools, urging the government to address the issue promptly to safeguard the well-being of school staff.

Additionally, Korankye emphasized the crucial role played by non-teaching staff in facilitating effective teaching and learning and called for increased recruitment to support educational institutions.

In solidarity, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, announced plans for a nationwide strike starting May 2 if the government fails to resolve the pension arrears issue by the end of April. He commended TEWU’s leadership and sister unions for their invaluable contributions to education across the country.

Ambrose Yao Kwadzodza, National Chairman of TEWU, echoed these sentiments, urging the government to prioritize the payment of Tier Two pension arrears without further delay.
