Work Begins On GIZ Sponsored Solar Powered Irrigation System at HTU

Work has began on the installation of a Solar Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) at Ho Technical University under the GIZ-Green People’s Energy Project.

The 143,000 Euro facility is being installed at University’s Demonstration Farm by construction firm, Pumptech Limited.

The project scope include, drilling, developing and mechanising of borehole, installation of solar panel and irrigation systems.

At a brief groundbreaking ceremony, on Monday for the project, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, said HTU was ever ready to see through the full implementation of the project,  which, he noted would not only inure to the benefit of the University but the larger community as a whole.

He also thanked GIZ and the Ministry of Energy for the confidence reposed in the university, to be partner to the Green People’s Energy Project.

The project, when completed, would serve as a demonstration centre for developing the capacity of training institutions, technicians/installers and credit officers in solar powered irrigation systems (SPIS) in Ghana.

It also used to provide competency-based trainings and improve efficiency in handling, operation and maintenance of SPIS hardware in Ghana.

Project Manager for GIZ-Green People’s Energy Project, Mr. Rafael Wiese, said the German agency was committed to promoting renewable energy to boost  agriculture production, and expressed optimism about the success of the project.

The facility is expected to be completed in  October, 2021.
