Ho Technical University students to construct Urine Diversion Dry Toilets in Ho Municipality

Students from Building Technology and Civil Engineering Departments of Ho Technical University under the supervision of the institution’s engineers and other technical staff of the Ho Municipal Assembly are to begin the construction of an improved 10 seater Urine Diversion Dry Toilets (UDDT) on campus and other selected institutions and communities in the municipality. These include the School of Hygiene, Freetown Basic School, the Avee – Gborgame commnunity among others.

Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony on Wednesday April 28, 2020, the Deputy Director of Technical,Vocational, Education and Training Research Centre of HTU and Project Team Leader, Dr. Kenneth Fafa Egbeadzor said the project aims at converting waste to manure, training students, ending open defecation in communities and to encourage the use of the waste by farmers.

Vice Chancellor of HTU, Prof. Ben Honyenuga said his joy was to know that students of the university will beyond the school’s construction also help the assembly on other constructions.

“The test case for us to be able to have it on campus here [ means] our engineers will supervise our students to be able to do the construction. And after this one, they will also have the opportunity to partner the district assembly to construct a number of these toilets within the Ho Municipal Assembly. For me this is the exciting news because we are bringing Adanu ( light) to the people as our motto says”

Municipal Chief Executive for Ho, Hon. Prosper Pi- Bansah who jointly cut the sod with the Vice Chancellor stated that the Assembly is poised to ensure environmental sanitation and to end open defecation.

The construction of the UDDT is a component of Open Defecation Free 2030 funded by the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Government of Finland with support from Dry Toilet Association of Finland, Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Jyvaskyla University of Applied Sciences all in Finland.

The projected is to be completed in 3 weeks at a cost of Thirty Four Thousand Euros.
