AGOTIME-ZIOPE DISTRICT FULLY SUPPORTS 2021 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS AS IT LAUNCHES “30-DAY COUNTDOWN TO CENSUS NIGHT”

The Agotime-Ziope District as part of final preparations towards Ghana’s 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) organized an event to commemorate its preparedness. The event dubbed “30-Day Countdown to Census Night” was launched at a stakeholder forum on Friday, May 28th, 2021 at the District Assembly Hall. The elaborate event offered an opportunity to stakeholders to deliberate, and re-emphasize the need for full participation of all Ghanaians in the 2021 Census.

Censuses in Ghana since 1960 are held every ten years. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic made it impossible for the Ghana Statistical Service to conduct the 2020 Population and Housing Census in March, 2020 which would have been exactly 10 years since the previous one in 2010; as recommended by the United Nations. The Deputy Director, Mr. Emmanuel Azimey in his welcome briefing reiterated the Assembly’s unflinching support to the census activities. Mr. Emmanuel Azimey added that the 2021 census will provide updated information on the population. This information would help track progress made with regards to international, national, regional and global development goals. He therefore underscored the need for every citizen to avail themselves and contribute to the success of the census in the District.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) fully support the census because it will address the various data gaps needed for effective planning of sectoral programmes at the district level. It is reassuring that the census will collect information on every structure, household and individual. Such data is critically needed by the MMDAs for tracking progress in particular efforts aimed at eradicating poverty and all forms of inequalities in the districts and localities”.

Further, storage facilities shall be allocated by the district assemblies ensure the success of the 2021 census.

In his keynote address, the District Chief Executive Hon. John Kwaku Amenyah indicated that many activities have been undertaken in preparedness of the District towards the census. Census Officials have been competitively recruited and are undergoing comprehensive and skillful training to prepare them for the exercise.

Hon. John Kwaku Amenyah added that Census night is 27th June, 2021. He reemphasized the need to remember the Census Night because you will be counted according to where you spend the census night in Ghana. He however reassured that, there is no need to change location or travel to your village/hometown to be enumerated. This is because census officials have been deployed by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and are required to visit all residences and structures to enumerate all persons who spend the census night in those structures regardless of their residence status.

The District Chief Executive stated that in the spirit of leaving no one behind, the census shall cover all members of the society including the vulnerable and the disadvantaged members of the society, such as persons living with disabilities (PLWDs), orphans and vulnerable children, the elderly and even the street family.

The Hon. DCE thus called on all Ghanaians and especially people in the Agotime-Ziope District to welcome Census Officials into their communities and provide the necessary information for their enumeration. He reminded the stakeholders that information provided to the Census Officials is strictly confidential as it will be handled only by persons who have taken the “Oath of Secrecy” as spelt out in the Statistical Service Act 2019 (Act 1003).

The District Census Officer (DCO), Mr. Jacob Nunekpeku took participants through the census process and some key upcoming activities. He stressed that the main goal of the Census is to achieve complete coverage. This dovetails in the leave no one behind agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Key upcoming activities include the training of enumerators and supervisors from Monday, 31st May, 2021 to Wednesday, 9th June, 2021, listing of structures begins from 13th June, Census Night is 27th June and enumeration of households and institutions that would begin on 28th June through to 11th July, 2021 covering a fourteen day duration.

The DCO stated that the GSS is ready for the conduct of the 2021 PHC. The theme for the 2021 PHC is You Count, Get Counted.
