The Ghana Tourism Authority in the Volta Region embarked on a tree planting exercise at Tafi Atome Game reserve. The exercise which formed part of the 2020 Emancipation Day celebrations in the region saw the team from the regional directorate of the authority led by its Regional Director, Mr. Alexander Nketiah plant fruit and other trees in the Sanctuarys game reserve.
In all, one hundred trees made up of Afram, Mahogany, June plum (Ator), Black velvet tamarind (Atitoe), Mango and Date palm were planted. The choice of seedlings was influenced by the presence of true Mona Monkeys in the game reserve.
Further, it is expected that the trees would not only provide a great greenery vegetation towards climate enhancement but help in feeding the monkeys in the reserve. Mr. Alexander Nketiah indicated that though it was emancipation day, the tree planting is being organized to in place of the usual enactment of the crossing of the River Pra in the which is held annually in the Central Region.
He further indicated that, the tree planting will also serve as a memorial that there are times we could not go about our normal activities due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Again, it is also to care for the environment and feed the Mona Monkeys in this game reserve.
Trees also serve as a source of oxygen thus, it will help in giving life and enhancing the well being of the indigenes of the community.
Mr. Alexander Nketiah thanked all the participants for making time to celebrate the emancipation program. Further, Mr. Nketiah, expressed satisfaction about the communitys acceptance of the tree planting project which saw children also actively taking part and owning the trees that were planted.
He advised the participants to each ensure the trees are catered for so they can grow well for the objectives of the exercise to be realised.
Mr. Francis Acquaye, site manager of Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary further thanked all who took part in the tree planting exercise.
Participants who were present were given an opportunity to tour the monkey sanctuary whilst observing the COVID 19 safety protocols.
