The Naval Training Command of the Ghana Armed Forces has formalised an affiliation with Ho Technical University through a Memorandum of Understanding for Academic Collaborations.
Under this partnership, HTU will provide academic mentorship and grant certification to recruits and officers of the Ghana Navy through the Command’s Supply Application School (SAS) at Nutekpor, near Dabala, South Tongu District.
At a brief but colourful ceremony at the F.O. Kwami Council Chamber on Tuesday, June 13, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga and Registrar, Dr. Christopher Amehoe signed the pact on behalf of the University, while, Commodore Prosper Modey, Chief Staff Officer at Naval Headquarters, and Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), at the Naval Training Command, singed for their institution.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor said the partnership as a ‘win-win’ one, would open up new opportunities in terms of skills, knowledge, and competencies for students and officers.
The collaboration, he noted, aligns with HTU’s strategic direction and mission to cultivate highly competent human capital through career-focused education, skills training, research, and innovation in collaboration with stakeholders.
Prof. Honyenuga expressed confidence that the joint academic programming would provide a unique blend of curricular offerings, faculty expertise, and resources that would enrich the educational experiences of both institutions.
Commodore Modey, in his address on behalf of Chief of Naval Staff, emphasized the testament of the MoU as collective commitment to excellence, collaboration, and continuous human improvement. He underscored the importance of shaping the future of supply and secretarial education within the naval forces to ensure preparedness for maritime operations.
He further noted that, the affiliation with HTU aligns with the Ghana Navy’s vision of training and maintaining a highly motivated, professional, and robust naval force capable of safeguarding the country against seaborne threats and upholding maritime domain safety.
‘The award of requisite certification to the naval personnel will equip them with adequate academic and professional knowledge to be competitive in the job market when they exit the Ghana Armed Forces after service,’ Cdre. Modey added.
On his part, Commodore Bessing, described the collaboration as a ‘new dawn’ for the Naval Training Command, in its quest to train highly skilled naval personnel, and assured of the commitment of the Command to keep to the terms of the MoU.
The occasion was witnessed by senior officers of the Ghana Navy, as well as members of the University Management, Deans, Directors and HoDs.
