The Volta/Oti Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association in collaboration with the Ho Municipal Environmental Health Office has marked this year’s Global Hand Washing Day with a donation to the Ho Technical University Model Basic School.
The donation according to the GJA Volta Chairman, Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi is to support the school in its attempt to instill discipline in the children to become ambassadors of personal hygiene and sanitation at all times and also to emphasize the point that, the GJA was and is not only interested in naming and shaming in its recently launched sanitation campaign but to offer help to society.
“Our sanitation campaign is on. We are against open urination, defecation and littering but we also know how important hand washing is to our health and that’s why we are here to support just as we were also supported”
The environmental health officers led by the Municipal Director, Aaron Amedzo used the occasion to demonstrate to students the best of way of hand washing and further explained the need to always wash hands.
The Headmistress of the school , Mad. Beatrice Kumor thanked the team for the kind gesture and hope the facility will help the school to maintain it’s position as the best performing school in the tippy taps campaign in the Ho Municipality. She however appealed to the Ghana Water Company Limited to help solve the problem of infrequent flow of water within the school community.
” We are doing our best to make this school the cleanest. We have been recognized with this certificate but the water situation is worrying us. The water doesn’t flow regularly for us to fill our gallons for use”
The hand washing device which can be described as another form of Veronica Bucket was designed and donated to the GJA by Community Alliance Foundation, Accra.
Global Handwashing Day is an international campaign to motivate and mobilize people around the world to improve their handwashing habits.Global Handwashing Day occurs on 15th October of each year. The day was marked on the theme: “Our hands, our future”.
