Central Tongu District Assembly Launches Girls Model School

Girls Model School is practically a school for the girl child and a system of education that deals with the psychological, cognitive and natural development of the girl child through education.

Speaking at the launch of the first ever Junior High Girl School in the Volta Region at Adidome, the DCE for the area, Thomas Moore Zonyra lauded the initiative saying “this will go a long way to reduce if not stop completely teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse and other social vices that shutter the dream of teenage girls of not attaining their potentials prematurely”.

The first Girls Model Junior High School was established in 2008 by Oxfam IBIS in the Sawla-Tuna Kalba District in the Northern Region of Ghana.  So far, the school has recorded 100% passes in the BECE after its first 24 out of 28 candidates of the first badge progressed to Senior High School.

The same body (Oxfam IBIS) in collaboration with the Central Tongu District Assembly, Ghana Education Service and the Adidome Agricultural Institute has established “Girls Model Junior High School” in the Volta Region.

The DCE revealed in his speech the girls will undergo practical agricultural lessons (operating tractors, harvesters etc) on the field aside the usual subjects studied and written at the Basic Education Certificate Examination. This he said will inure to the benefit of the girls in gaining admission into any Technical University and any other university after passing the “Proficiency 1&2 in Agriculture exams” to study Agriculture Engineering as a Course.

“We are making every effort to bring onboard the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) to partner us due to their immense contribution to our District over the years” Mr. Moore said.

The Adidome Farm Institute currently Houses the thirty six students by making available their ICT laboratory and a classroom block. The school is under the management of the district assembly and the Ghana Education Service. It is yet to get its permanent site. Some female teachers and headmistress have been assessed and tasked with the responsibility of caring and educating the girls.

In taking steps to reduce the alarming teenage pregnancy rate in the District, Mr. Moore believes there is the need to camp girls under the same roof and impact in them discipline, social values, above all guidance and counseling as they study.

In launching the school at the Adidome Farm Institute on Monday 19th February, he was of high hope the school will someday become a Girls Senior High School which will churn out responsible female leaders in some years to come but in the interim reduce the endemic teenage pregnancy and its associated burden in the District.
