The battle towards the December 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections over which party is developing Ghana better has begun in the Volta Region between the two main political parties in Ghana: The National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party.
Reacting to separate press conferences held by the NDC where the party accused the NPP of neglecting the region and scoring 17% for the delivery in their 2016 campaign promises to the Volta Region which it claimed repredented only 3 of 17 specific promises, the NPP says the accusations are baseless and are as a result of the lack of understanding of its promises by the NDC prior to the 2016 elections.
In a press conference Monday July 29, 2020, regional chairman, Makafui Kofi Woanyah who was reacting to an earlier address by Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that, whilst many MPs in Ghana are taking advantage of the One – District One – Factory initiative by the government on Public – Private Partnership, Members of Parliament in the region are not taking steps to bring any to their communities.
The pathetic thing is that, elsewhere this 1D1F is being championed by their colleague MPs in their regions. What do they have to show?. It doesn’t only take government to establish factories. Unlike other MPs who are championing the course of 1D1F in their constituencies, what efforts are the NDC MPs from Volta Region making to take advantage of this laudable government policy?
The One District, One Factory initiative is captured in the NPPs 2016 manifesto. It states that “In collaboration with the private sector, the NPP will implement the ” One District, One Factory ” Initiative. This District Industrilzation Programme will ensure an even, spatial spread of industries”
Mr. Woanyah also stated that the impact of COVID-19 and its associated restrictions have affected the resumption of works on phase 3 of the 5 district water project that is to serve Adaklu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Ho West Districts and Ho Municipal despite parliament’s funding approval.
